The Medulla nebula, also called Abell 85, LBN 576, SNR G116.9+00.1, and CTB-1, is a supernova remnant. It is in Abell's catalog of planetary nebulae but later was determined to be a supernova remnant. It consists of an expanding gas shell that was left when a massive star, toward the constellation of Cassiopeia, exploded about 10,000 years ago, casting off its exterior mass. The gas shell contains a lot of Hydrogen Alpha (Ha) and Oxygen III (Oiii) gases and is extremely faint. The field is also rich in interstellar dust providing even more depth to the image.

When I first saw an image of this region, it immediately was added to my "must do" list. I had seen a few attempts at capturing this nebula, but not many people put in the effort because it takes a lot of time to capture the details. This is 40 hours if integration time and a significant effort in processing. I processed the narrowband into an HOO palette and then merged the RGB stars to regain their proper color.

Monsoon season in AZ forces me to miss many summer targets, but I was able to land this one. My entire month of September was this one target. Enjoy!
