Description

This near edge-on grand design spiral galaxy is located only 12 million light years away in the constellation of Sculptor at a declination of -25 degrees. It has a diameter of 95,000 light years and spans almost a half of a degree in our apparent view, about the size of our full moon.

This object is one of the brightest galaxies in the sky. Also known as the Silver Coin, Silver Dollar, and Sculptor Galaxy, astronomers have labeled NGC 253 a starburst galaxy because of the large amount of star formation which is occurring.

From earth's line of sight, the galaxy appears tipped steeply at 80 degrees. It is difficult but not impossible to trace the two spiral arms, which spiral out 360 degrees from a barred core. I find it easier to trace the arms from outside-to-inside for this galaxy.

Many meandering dark dust regions are visible throughout the disk. The large amount of dust in the galaxy disk causes the central region to be more yellow than expected.
