Description

NGC 1491 The Fossil Footprint in Perseus done in Hubble Palette

This bright emission nebula and HII region is very close to the Double Cluster of stargazing fame. The largest portion of the nebula is ionized hydrogen with a smaller oxygen region in the center. The target proved to be somewhat a challenge to process since the inner core is extremely bright compared to the more dimmer outer regions. So when processing is PixInsight,  a combination of the MaskedStretch process and the ColorCorrectedHDRMT script were used to dim this area down and not be over-saturated.

Interestingly, the examples found on Astrobin and elsewhere seem to have no common color scheme, and each astrophotographer appears to have their own interpretation. While a medium blue seemed natural for the inner section, the fringes color proved a challenge to finalize, going through many shades of yellow with tints of green to reddish hues. The above is what I finnally settled on.

Subframes taken over the nights of September 8, 9, 13, 14 and 15, 2022.
