Description

EAGLE NEBULA (M16)

The Eagle Nebula (Messier 16) is a beautiful star forming region located in Serpens.  It is a well-known emission nebula surrounding a young open star cluster. The cluster associated with the nebula consists of a number of young stars of the spectral types O and B.

Messier 16 is best known for the famous Pillars of Creation (at center), a region where intense star forming activity is taking place. The Eagle Nebula contains several active starburst regions seen in this widefield image which is a composite of 3 filters in the visible range (Red, Green and Blue) and 1 in the narrowband invisible range (Hydrogen Alpha / H-alpha (Hα)) which is abundant surrounding the open cluster.

This image was taken over the span of several evenings in Bortle 2 skies outside Flagstaff, Arizona totaling 16 hours of data acquisition.
