Description

A week ago I met a curious wild fox while photographing the auroras on a frozen lake. The fox was running circles around me and even jumped on my camera tripod while I was standing next to it. It felt like an once-in-a-lifetime situation, but last night while I was on an another aurora adventure and heading back home, I saw glowing yellow eyes approaching me, thinking if it was a rabbit, but no. It was the same fox. I tried photographing it with the auroras again, but it honestly is an extremely difficult task, especially now that the bright moon is not here to help. The fox was full of energy and kept running and jumping around. It even stole both of my gloves that I left on the snow so I could take photos easier with my bare hands. In the second photo you see it chewing one of the gloves.

I feel like fox is a very special animal to photograph the auroras with because of the Finnish mythology for the auroras. The Finnish word for them is "revontulet" which directly translates to "fox-fires." According to the old mythology when it runs along the tundra, the fox’s flaming tail sweeps snowflakes into the sky and the fur scratches the trees, setting the skies on fire.
