Description

Party like it's NGC 1999

Summer's here again and what better way to celebrate than to showcase one of the most spectacular parts of the sky. That's right, it's the Orion Nebula's often unnoticed, better looking, and much more interesting brother, NGC 1999 (and friends).

NGC 1999 (center of image) is a dust reflection nebula containing an immense void of empty space. Historically, astronomers believed the nebula to contain dense dark dust cloud, blocking the light behind it. But in 2009 observations in infrared revealed the vast hole through the nebula, it's formation not fully known.

Also invited to the party are a number of reflection nebulae: IC 427, IC 428, IC 429, and IC 430; all dressed up and feeling pretty swathes of interstellar dust and hydrogen gas emissions.

The image is comprised of Ha data captured from my back yard, combined with RGB data collected from the local astronomy groups dark site.

Data captured over various dates from December 2022 to January 2023.
