Imaging Setup

Description

This is the setup that I am using in spring 2020.

This is an EdgeHD 8 with an Astro-Physics AP1600 with absolute encoders and a QSI 690wsg-8. There is a Pegasus Astro Ultimate PowerBox v2 mounted on the OTA's top dovetail bar. The PowerBox runs the dew heaters and Optec focus motor, and also acts as a power USB hub for the main and guide cameras.

The Apache case on the ground has an HP EliteDesk Core i5 mini PC, a PowerPole distribution box, an Ethernet hub and a wireless router installed. The wireless router is configured as either a bridge to my home wireless network, or as a wireless hotspot for imaging in the field. The PC has all of the imaging software installed and I run it using Remote Desktop from another machine, which could be a laptop, a table, or my desktop in my home office. To mount the components in the case, I drilled small holes and use zip ties to secure everything. This means that the case is no longer waterproof, but since I only use it when I am imaging, this is not a problem.

There are two cables running through the mount, a 12v power cable and a USB 3 cable. To set up, I install the OTA and connect the two cables to the PowerBox. The other ends of the cables plug into the components in the Apache case. The CP4 controller for the mount has an Ethernet cable and power cable that also plug into components in the case.

When I am done imaging, I can just unplug the 4 cables, close the case and carry it away. The OTA can be similarly unplugged from the two through-the-mount cables and removed. I have another mount that I use for portable imaging in the field and everything can be moved from one mount to the other in a couple of minutes.

The box that is sitting on the ground next to the case is a PowerWerx 30 amp power supply. For home use, this is connected to the PowerPole distribution in the case. For imaging in the field, I use a pair of 75 amp hour AGM batteries in parallel as an alternative to the power supply.

Also visible, there are two Golden Rod heaters attached to the pier. When I cover the system with a Telegizmos 365, these prevent excessive humidity in the damp Pacific Northwest.
