Description

The Ring Nebula is a planetary nebula located 2300 light-years away in Lyra.   In the same field is IC 1296, a faint barred spiral that resides a much further 220 million light-years distant in the near line of sight.  The two make for a nice pair.     There are several much fainter fuzzies in the field along with the primary targets.

I'll note that an excellent article I've kept for many years is the Observer's Log from the September 2001 Sky & Telescope, which provides the photometry of many faint stars in the field.   In this image, the field easily exceeds the 19.8 faintest magnitude provided in the article.

I struggled with the dynamic range of M57 during post-processing.   The inner region is extremely bright (all but blown out) as compared to the very faint outer shells of nebulosity.  By the time I was finished beating down the inner region, all but a faint ring of the outer "flower" was gone.   I will try again in the future on this HDR image to see if I can't get more from the high & low end.   As such, this is a work in progress.   For now, I thought I'd give equal billing to each object via offset placements in the image.
