Description

Trying the 400mm 5.6L lens on a globular in less than ideal conditions. It was windy, and the nearly full moon (96.6%) was to rise at 11:18 pm. There were high altitude clouds forming a hazy layer. There wasn't a whole lot more that could go wrong but still allow me to image. And I even forgot to guide! I started as soon as I could, getting started and polar aligned and framing done before the sky was totally dark, and started imaging at around 10:25 pm. After a few test exposures I was in a rush to start and forgot to enable guiding. When I realized a few minutes later, I decided with the shorter exposures it'd be a good test of just the tracking performance. The SkyGuider has been very good to me, and didn't disappoint. Well perhaps not a great test due to the haze and moon rising leading to poorer results. With twilight still in the sky I started with 20 second exposures. Watching the ADU values drop a little after 35 shots, I upped the exposure to 30". I shot as the moon started to rise. I saw the ADU values creep back up but decided to keep going. They got back to where I started after 85 shots. I decided to attempt to keep going a little longer and dropped the exposure back down to 20".

Compared to my image of M5 this one is definitely softer, but I am still pleased considering this was much more of a budget lens and almost half the aperture of my 500mm lens (72 vs 125 mm) as well as the atmospheric haze and twilight/full moon glow (I used no filters either).
