Description

This is a small portion of the Vela supernova, which exploded about 11,000 years ago. Its remnants sprawl across 8° of the night sky (about 16 times the width of the full moon), but are extremely dim, requiring very long exposure times.

As we all know, supernovas forge heavy elements, so we might just be looking at the raw materials that will, in some unimaginably distant future, be part of the formation of a rocky, Earth-like planet that will give rise to an intelligence that will look up and contemplate their skies.
