Description

This rarely imaged object, also known as PN G038.1-25.4, is a planetary nebula located 12,000 light years away in the constellation of Aquila at a declination of -7 degrees. The nebula spans 1 arc-minute in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 3 light years.

The central star of the nebula is clearly visible. The nebula is a typical planetary nebula with hydrogen gas dominating the outer rim and oxygen gas dominating the inner region. I like how the whitish area of the outer rim is scalloped in the areas where the two gases have similar strengths.

The galaxy PMN J2033-0656 is located millions of light years behind Abell 70, which creates the "diamond ring" look of its nickname.
