Description

IC2948 is near the core of IC2944, known as the Running Chicken nebula or the Lambda Centauri Nebula.  It lies 6,500 light years away from us in the constellation Centaurus.

Why is it called the running chicken?  I used to think it was the look of the wide field view that included the two round shaped nearby nebula.  A creative mind could see a running chicken in IC2948 itself, the bright emission and reflection nebula that is the highlight of this image.  According to Wiki, it is because the open star cluster IC2944, which lies outside of this field of view, resembles a running chicken.

The area is famous for its very distinct Bok Globules, the small dark clouds visible at the upper left region of the image.  These are know as Thackeray's Globules after the astronomer David Thackeray who discovered them only very recently in 1950.  While Bok Globules are usually associated with star formation, there is no evidence of that here.

I chose a straightforward SHO pallet with a bit of blending to make it a bit more dynamic.

Hope you like it.
