Description

Amazing how much has changed with my equipment since I posted my first image to Astrobin two-years ago, which was the Helix Nebula.  I started out with a Nikon DSLR and a Celestron Ultima fork mount.  Currently, I use an ASI294MM and a wonderful Losmandy CG-11 mated to a Gemini 2.  Everything was manual back then and I had to babysit the telescope throughout the night.  Now it's automated and I get a decent night's rest while collecting images.  I've gotten pickier about my sky, preferring to image LRGB from my favorite dark sky site at Mount Laguna, and capture narrowband images from my suburban backyard.  I also moved to PixInsight for image processing, although StarTools is a great program and it helped me to understand the concepts and processing steps used in astrophotography.  In the beginning, I don't know that I would have stuck with it but for StarTools.

In the future, the next time I image the Helix Nebula, I'll wait until I have more aperture to help capture the faintest Ha wisps.

The Ha and Oiii was collected from my backyard over multiple nights in July, August and wrapping up in September with a trip to Mount Laguna to collect RGB for the stars.
