Description

This shot required considerable effort and all the lore Mr. Nic and I could summon. This is a 4-panel mosaic of the California Nebula, NGC 1499. Taken over four nights in early December with the small refractor for a total exposure time of more than 24 hours, this one was a challenge to put together—but it gave us the confidence to continue shooting more wide-field mosaics. There are many, many images of the central region. But you’ll find very few that show the entire object from stem to stern. We didn’t want to produce another one of the former. Nor did we want to produce a low-resolution single shot. So we braved the cold for four nights to get four quality panels to share with our adoring fans, which now number in the dozen (yes, dozen) of people. 🤪

The California Nebula is located in Perseus about 1,000 light years away. It’s appearance is deceiving. While it’s an emission nebula powered by stars born in its midst, it’s not a prolific star-forming region. It looks like it would be with its bright red, hydrogen-rich color and billowing clouds. But it’s actually very thin and doesn’t produce stars at nearly the rate of other similar-looking nebulas like the North America or Pelican Nebulas. Still, what it lacks in stellar production, it makes up for in sheer beauty. This, to me, is one of the few nebulas that looks really good in red.
