The Cocoon Nebula

A revolution in astrophotography. No, not my images, though slightly hazy with high humidity, a night uncropped by clouds from dusk to dawn.

The first object was the Cocoon. This sneaky chap was hard to unveil even after three hours integration through a quad band filter. It does seem to have low surface brightness requiring longer exposure in the order of 5 minutes per frame.

Rev B: The rising Pleiades were second on the shooting list with 2.5 hours integration nicely unveiling the nebulosities around the stars Merope and Maia.

Rev C: The moon taken right after the Pleiades is inserted to image scale to depict the apparent sizes (same scope and camera, 5ms, gain 180, 600 frames).

Rev D: The moon image isolated.

Rev E: The last wasn't Orion but the man running around Orion observed during one hour until the rising sun warmly suggested to close the night.

Gear used: TS-70SDQ (Ø71mm/450mm) and Uranus-C (IMX585) camera.

Rev F and G: The two wide fields, The region between Cassiopeia and Perseus (Rev F) and the constellation of Orion (Rev G), were taken in parallel on an SA Pro mobile mount, Nikon D5500, 50mm lens and LPR. The lens appears to have inner tilt as the left side is off focus though cropped.

Not sure whether there will ever be a night like that on Sep 8/9 2023 again.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
