Description

This was a rather large project I undertook out of nowhere. Started with just one panel  of the Cygnus wall and then snowballed into a 6 panel mosaic covering the region. Ha and OIII data was taken from my backyard in Los Angeles, LRGB data was taken from a Bortle 2 site in the Inyo Mountains. Spent a week at Grandview campground gather the data and then another several days at home to process and here we are.

This was my first project using the QHY OAG and ZWO ASI174 Mini having previously used a ZWO ASI120mm - mini on a 60mm guidescope. And what a huge difference that made, I can easily do tons of 300s+ subs without having to throw any out due to tracking errors. Very happy so far.

Started using the photometricmosaic workflow in Pixinsight for this project. Finally, seemingly perfect mosaics! Without going into tons of detail (there are plenty of excellent guides online) my workflow is as follows: 1. Stack each panel on it's own the normal way as if each was it's own image.  2. Crop out each panels edges to get rid of low SNR regions from stacking 3. Gradient removal, either DBE or ABE. A light touch is key here 4. Plate solve each image using ImageSolver. Be sure to enable Distortion Correction. Default settings for Distortion Correction work fine.  5. MosaicByCoordinates using all your different panels. Defaults are fine except I'll make projection Gnomonic. I'm imaging around 600mm so this works fine, other field of views may require different projections but I'd only worry about that if you're going very wide with camera lenses.   6. TrimMosaicTiles. Manually inspect each panel to trim out low SNR regions.  7. PhotometricMosaic. I'll combine each row or column one panel at a time, then combine the different rows or columns together using this tool. Only setting I change is the the combination mode, I found average works best for me.
