Description

The Rosette Nebula found in the Orion Constellation, photographed to be close to (but not quite) natural color (little on warm side). My second attempt at this target, acquired in December 2023, with a stock 90d and canon 100-400mm ii lens.

Total integration time: 2 hours, high clouds interrupted session.

Lights were first calibrated with Adobe’s new denoise (set to 7) and enhance rawconverter.

Newly created DNGs processed as 32-bit HDR, in-camera daylight balance and applied lens correction, color space HDR Rec2020. Exported 32-bit TIFFs into DSS, 2x drizzle (slight crops in framing due to manual dithering).

Rnc-color-stretch for sky removal and color preserving stretch, using v1.02 to pinpoint blackpoint and to apply tone curve.

Photoshop for minor curve work, then Imagesplus64 for binning 2x2 average and minor sharpening. Photoshop then used for changing color space to sRGB and JPEG.

Equipment: Stock Canon 90d and 100-400mm ii at 400mm f/5.6 (71mm aperture).

Skies: Bortle 4/5 in VA December 2023.

Tracking: Fornax Lighttrack ii. No guiding.

Subframes: 27 seconds, ISO 1600. No darks, no flats and no bias. Adobe's rawconverter applied flats by lens correction to linear data and incorporated bias from exif data.
