Description

The Veil Nebula is a cloud of heated and ionized gas (oxygen, sulfur, and hydrogen) and dust in the constellation Cygnus.  It constitutes the visible portions of the Cygnus Loop, a supernova remnant, many portions of which have acquired their own individual names and catalogue identifiers.

This image is of the Western Veil Nebula.  As APOD so eloquently puts it, the Western Veil Nebula is “an expanding cloud born of the death explosion of a massive star”.  NGC 6960 (Caldwell 34) is often referred to as the Witch’s Broom (seen at the upper-right portion of this image) as its delicate filamentary structure resembles this memorable shape.
