Description

For 3 years I had been chasing the northern lights almost full-time, but never once had I properly seen the dark blue colors. They are rare and usually get mixed with other colors. Luckily for me, the aurora activity on March 23th was highest in 6 years which made these colors visible. This season has been by far the best for me and theres only 3 weeks left before it ends as the nights are getting less and less dark.

Blue auroras can only be seen during the strongest aurora storms and the best time for these is early and late season when the sun is not so much below the horizon. The ultraviolet light will ionize the nitrogens in the upper parts of the aurora rays which will make the nitrogen emit photons in the blue wavelength.

Kilpisjärvi, Finland. 69 north.
