Description

This object is a tiny planetary nebula located 3600 light years away in the constellation of Auriga at a declination of +46 degrees. The 10.7 magnitude nebula spans 20 arc-seconds in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 1/3 light year. It is about the same apparent size as Saturn.

Many sources report that it is much smaller in size, but the nebula extent is clearly 20 arc-seconds in my image. Perhaps the other reported sizes only include the stellar-like central portion.

The nebula is blue, suggesting primarily OIII signal. The central star is cleary visible. Most striking is the faint bi-polar reddish ansae at each end of the nebula. Because of these features, the nebula closely resembles the much larger NGC 7009 nebula (the Saturn Nebula).
