Description

I always have a story to tell! I very rarely use the Nikon D800 for astrophotography, but I have been waiting for an opportunity to image this galaxy with it, because I really liked the idea of a widefield view. After all, with my other cameras it tends to fill the frame. Anyway, I set out to take 60 subs of it at 6 minutes long each, but alas the wireless timer failed [as per normal - it does not like this camera, so I have ordered a different one], and so I actually got only 30 subs. Also, the vast majority of them were in my worst light polluted zone, and so bad was it that pretty much 20 subs of the object were almost 'whited-out'. When I stacked them the laptop crashed - they are massive files - but it worked the second time round. Then the stack had such a bad gradient from the light pollution I feared it was impossible to process this, even with DBE in PixInsight. But, after some effort, I am pleased I have got what I did. I really like the full frame Nikon and it holds the colour of the stars well, even the larger ones - far more than my Canon 700Da. If only I had a modified version of the D800 too! I may try imaging this again when it moves into a better area of the sky - but I took my opportunity on Monday because I knew the weather was closing in. Needless to write, I used my 3" refractor for this - my Skywatcher ED 80. Thanks everyone...
