Description

Here's another project that stems from my ongoing fascination with Wolf-Rayet stars. NGC 3199 is the nebula surrounding Wolf-Rayet star WR 18 (aka HD 89358). It's located in Carina near the much more conspicuous Carina Nebula. In natural color images, NGC 3199 has an unusual lavender color that I assume is from a balanced contribution of Ha and OIII emission (I'm assuming that there's no reflection component in the vicinity of a Wolf-Rayet star.)

When processing this data set, I was striving to combine natural looking colors of RGB with the detailed structure of narrowband, and so I opted for an approximately natural color mapping for Ha, SII, and OIII. Since the SII and Ha emission lines have wavelengths that are quite close to each other, the final image doesn't showcase the distinction between these two gases well. Still, for purely aesthetic reasons, I prefer this palette over a Hubble style mapping. Where the sulfur signal really helps is with the red filaments inside the blue oxygen shell of the nebula. The stars are added from RGB frames.
