Description

The short nights during the summer months at our latitude mean we have to pick targets that are bright and near the zenith. The Pelican is found adjacent to the North America Nebula in the constellation Cygnus and is part of a vast molecular cloud that is alive with hot young stars, dark dust banks, and beautiful wispy filaments. This image was composed from the best images from a larger set collected in August of 2022, totalling over 6 hours of integration time. The lesson from working on this image is that with a 5" refractor on dim objects like this one more is definitely better. Six hours would be a minimum for my setup, but I suspect 12 would be noticeably better.
