Description

The IC 63 nebula, also known as the "Ghost of Cassiopeia" due to its evocative shape, is a region of bright nebulosity located in the constellation Cassiopeia.

IC 63 is an emission nebula illuminated by a nearby hot star of spectral type O, giving it its characteristic bluish color.
This star is ionizing the surrounding gas, causing it to glow and creating a spectacular sight in the night sky.

Its elongated and irregular shape, reminiscent of a ghost with elongated "hands", has captured the imagination of astronomy enthusiasts and photographers of the starry sky.

It is about 613 light years away from our solar system, easy to locate, as it is located about half a degree north-east of the bright star γ Cassiopeiae, an irregular, very hot and young variable star with a radius 14 times that of our Sun , and 50,000 times brighter.

The nebula is slowly dissolving under the influence of the violent stellar wind emitted by γ Cassiopeiae.
