Description

M37 is the largest of three open clusters catalogued by Messier in the constellation Auriga (the Charioteer).  Captain William Henry Smyth observed it in 1836 and described it as "a magnificent object, the whole field being strewed as it were with sparkling gold dust."

About 4,500 light years from us, M37 contains more than 500 stars in a volume 25 light years across.
