Description

A nice pairing of geometries is shown here with Messier 77 (left) and NGC 1055 (right).  M77 is 47 million light-years distant, while NGC 1055 is ~52 million light-years distant.  Both galaxies are well over 100K light years in diameter; M77 is estimated at ~170K light years in diameter.    It's somewhat hard to imagine that NGC 1055 wasn't discovered at the same time as M77, but the edge on geometry must have played a role.

M77 contains an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN), and hosts a (non-visual) barred structure in the core.   NGC 1077 exhibits a huge amount of dust/gas around the disk, with lots of distributed stars in its halo.   This suggests a past collision or near miss with another galaxy.

There are quite a few small galaxies in or near the field, and a few colored stars help add a bit of spice to the image.
