Description

Ncg2736-Pencil Nebula

Despite the seemingly tranquil, unchanging beauty of a starry sky, the Universe is not a tranquil place. Stars are born and die in an endless cycle, and sometimes the death of a star creates views of unparalleled beauty as matter is flung out into space to form strange structures in the sky.

This is the case with the Pencil Nebula!

This peculiar glowing gas cloud is part of a huge ring of debris left by a supernova explosion, which happened around 11,000 years ago.

A supernova is a violent stellar explosion resulting from the death of a massive star or a white dwarf in a double star system.

The structure resulting from the explosion is called the supernova remnant and consists of ejected material expanding at supersonic speeds into the surrounding interstellar medium.

Supernovae are the main source of heavy chemical elements in the interstellar medium, which in turn leads to the chemical enrichment of a new generation of stars and planets.
