Description

NGC 772 is a uniquely shaped galaxy with an exceptionally prominent arm.   It lies 130 million light years away.   Also in the field is NGC 770 and many other galaxies at much further distance.   In this view, IFN is present around the field, including some that seemingly intermixes with the galaxy visually, but of course this is not the case as IFN is within our own galaxy.    It makes for a nice field however.  NGC 772 is a big galaxy, estimated at 200K light years in diameter, which makes it twice as large as the Milky Way.

NGC 770's interaction with NGC 772 is thought to be the reason why the single arm is so developed as compared with the rest of the galaxy's structure.  For the interaction/odd shape, the galaxy was also cataloged as Arp 78.
