Description

This image is an untracked capture of Jupiter comprised of the four best 12,000 frame captures from a 45 minute session.

Conditions:
  • High humidity & high level haze. Transparency was 3/5.
  • Jupiter approximately 54 degrees altitude
  • Seeing was very good

Equipment
  • 14.7" DIY dobsonian with Lockwood primary
  • 2.7x APM Coma Correcting barlow in stock configuration
  • ZWO ASI224MC with Baader IR Cut filter

Capture
  • Untracked
  • Position Jupiter just at the edge of the field, start recording, let it drift, press pause when it reaches the other side of the field, re-position, and start again until 12,000 frames captured. Repeat several times.
  • Firecapture
  • 5ms exposure
  • Gain 265 (this kept histogram roughly at 65%)
  • Full field of view since I was doing manual tracking (150FPS max)

Processing
  • PIPP to crop and stabilize since I needed the full field during capture and couldn't set an ROI. Cropping keeps the file size low for future storage, and speeds up downstream processing.
  • AutoStakkert to stack.
  • Kept 25% best frames.
  • Stack each video 8 times using different sized APs. This produces a slightly different noise pattern in each stacked image without changing the macro alignment of details.
  • Load each of the 8 stacked images into Photoshop as a smart stack, go to Layers -> Stack Mode -> Median. This provides a *tiny* bit of noise smoothing before processing.
  • Sharpen and color correct each re-stacked image in Astra Image. Lucy Richardson Deconvolution.
  • Identified the four best of about a dozen final sharpened images, and then derotated in WinJupos
  • Final levels, smart sharpening, and unsharp mask in Photoshop.
