Description

Cygnus is full of both popular and unusual objects. Here is another off the beaten path. This is Semeis 57 - The Propeller Nebula. It was cataloged as an HII region in the 1950's by researchers at the Semeiz Observatory in Ukraine. As you can see in the image it is rich in many elements in addition to HII. The interesting structure in the center of the image is thought to be outflow from a rapidly rotating source. There are actually a pair of arms but I notice in this image the smaller arm appears to be mostly dark dust.  This structure can be found about 5 degrees SW of Deneb and not far from Cygnus X-1.
