Description

This HII emission nebula, also known as LBN 1048 and RCW 8, is located 14,000 light years away in the constellation of Puppis at a declination of -19 degrees.  It spans 6 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a width of 20 light years.

The star cluster at the center of the image is Meyer 3, which is ionizing the nebula.   The bright region at the lower left extent of the nebula is the young stellar object (YSO) designated RAFGL 5232.
