The Dumbbell Nebula holds great personal significance for me. It was the first Deep Sky Object (DSO) I attempted to photograph just two days before my wedding. Whenever I gaze upon it, I am reminded of the remarkable progress I have made in both astrophotography and life in general throughout the years. One major lesson learned on this project was that I had been auto-guiding incorrectly for an entire year! It was a surprising realization, and I couldn't help but feel incredibly dumb.

During the numerous imaging sessions dedicated to M27 over the past month, I encountered challenges in capturing sharp, well-rounded star shapes, these difficulties were a result of incorrect settings in PHD2 and a mishap where I accidentally broke the glass alignment reticle inside the polar scope on my CEM26 mount, causing subpar polar alignment. Furthermore, poor seeing conditions and a sparsely populated starfield around M27 contributed to my struggles with guiding.

Nevertheless, when comparing my latest attempt to the one from June 2022, I am delighted to observe a significant improvement in the abundance of red nebulosity scattered throughout the "apple core", making this image a source of great satisfaction for me.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
