This is the cleanest and most accurate photograph I've captured of M101 to date, by "accurate" I'm referring to the shape of the galaxy structure itself and how natural looking this photo is. I credit the success of this image because of an important lesson learned in this project regarding the essentialness of proper calibration frames to be taken when collecting data.

This was the first astrophoto I've created using proper stacking of light frames, dark frames, and flat frames, and by doing this I could stretch the luminosity on the DSO as much as I could without severely compromising the rest of the image. Typically, I use post-processing techniques to correct harsh vignetting artifacts that prevent histogram levels stretching, however as any experienced astrophotographer knows, this only works well to an extent.

I've been told by a few members in my recent forum post regarding the possibility of poor seeing conditions or sky transparency affecting the outcome of this photo that I should've picked an easier target to photograph at this time of year, but I'm very satisfied to have came out with this result after much data collection and post-processing work.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status.
