Description

The so called Perseus Molecular Cloud (Per MCld) covers a region of about 6 x 2 degrees which contains star forming regions like IC 348 in this image. Per MCld is about 1,000 ly from earth.

IC 348 is an about 2 million years old open star cluster embeded into the reflection nebula vdB 19 (Cederblad 20) that is lighted by the 3,8 mag star Omicron Persei ("Atik").

The region is also characterized by large clouds of interstellar dust. The magenta/red glooming area in the left part of the image is the dark nebula Barnard 3 surrounded by an accumulation of dust that shows a red luminescense in response to ultraviolet photons known as Extended Red Emission (ERE).

The image was shot with an ASI2600mmpro and a 130/910mm TS Photoline triplet apo reduced to 720 mm f/5.75.
