This is my first published image using automated guiding, and from light polluted skies. My prior images were manually guided with illuminated reticle and 1980's era equipment and were taken in Bortle 1 skies in Death Valley.

The switch to automated guiding has been hard, but of course I'm happy I was able to make the switch and get through the pains of the learning curve.

This OSC image was captured through Bortle 8 skies with no flats, darks or bias frames. Subs were first processed with RawTherapee and then stacked in DSS using no background calibration. Final processing in Photoshop included an Astroflat Pro filter step. Light pollution was subtracted by zeroing out the red, green and blue channels at the left side of the histogram. Remaining steps were simple curve stretching, an exposure increase of the nebula using a mask of the entire image except the nebula, and finally a noise reduction filter step.

I never expected to publish an image taken from my light polluted skies since I don't do narrow band work, and I assumed the images would not be worthy to publish. I must say I'm pleased with this result, but I appreciate any constructive feedback.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
