Description

"A BARRED SPIRAL GALAXY IN CENTAURUS"
- Deepsky 2857mm LRGB
- Area Constellation Centaurus

NGC 4945 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Centaur in the southern starry sky and is probably very similar to our Milky Way. It is estimated to be 13 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 140,000 light years. The galaxy belongs to the so-called Seyfert galaxies, a special type of active galaxy whose center emits far more energy than quieter galaxies like our Milky Way. Together with seven other galaxies, it forms the NGC 5128 group. The type IIP supernova "SN2005af" was discovered here on February 8, 2005.
