Description

Lying approximately 70 million light-years distant, NGC 2146 appears to be taking a bit of the worse end of a close encounter with another galaxy, possibly the other field galaxy present (NGC 2146a).   The galaxy is classified as a barred spiral, but also a starburst galaxy.  It's size is a bit smaller than the Milky Way, being ~80K light-years in diameter.

Given the nice inner structure visible in the galaxy, I pushed de-convolution just a bit further than I normally would to bring out some of those fine details.  I'm somewhat surprised that this pairing isn't photographed more often!   It's a nice pair for sure.
