Description

While TheSkyX identifies NGC 5867 as M102 (Messier object 102) there is actually considerable debate over whether this object is M102. In the original Messier Catalog, M101 and M102 were the same object. Much research into the letters written by Charles Messier and his associate Pierre Mechain around the time of observations which led to the assembly of the list of objects has only led to additional confusion over the true identity of the object. There also is the complication that the described object by Pierre Mechain appears to have been a "needle like object of fair brightness" of which there are a few in the constellation of Draco, so the true identity may never be known.

I shot this object on the evening of May 3rd, 2020 with a half moon and I think the picture came out quite nice even with all of the light pollution and moonlight present.
