Description

The California Nebula, also known as NGC 1499, is a large emission nebula located in the constellation Perseus. It is named for its resemblance to the outline of the U.S. state of California. The nebula is illuminated by the bright star Menkib (Xi Persei), which is not hot enough to ionize the nebula's hydrogen atoms directly. Instead, the nebula is primarily illuminated by the star's ultraviolet radiation, causing the hydrogen gas to emit its own light in the characteristic red color associated with emission nebulae. The California Nebula is approximately 1,000 light-years from Earth and spans a region of the sky about 2.5 times the size of the full moon.
