The Leo Triplet (M65, M66, NGC3628) is a group of three spiral galaxies in the constellation Leo. They are located about 35 million light-years away and are connected by gravitational interaction. The galactic disk is tilted differently in all three. NGC 3628 can be seen frontally, M 65 and M 64 are tilted so far that spiral arms can be seen.

The picture was taken over 6 nights from my south-facing balcony in Berlin. When stacking, I used Drizzle 2x in DSS. The L-Extreme data didn't add much to the final picture. Only in M 66 did I mix some of the Ha signal.

Das Leo Triplet (M65, M66, NGC3628) ist eine Gruppe von drei Spiral-Galaxien im Sternbild Löwe. Sie liegen ungefähr 35 Millionen Lichtjahre entfernt und sind verbunden durch gravitative Wechselwirkung. Die galaktische Scheibe ist bei allen drei unterschiedlich geneigt. NGC 3628 ist frontal zu sehen, M 65 und M 64 sind soweit geneigt, dass Spiralarme zu erkennen sind.

Das Bild ist über 6 Nächte von meinem Süd-Balkon in Berlin entstanden. Beim stacken habe ich in DSS 2x Drizzle benutzt. Die L-Extreme-Daten haben nicht viel zum End-Bild beigetragen. Nur bei M 66 habe ich etwas von dem Ha-Signal eingearbeitet.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.

Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
