Usually bears are pretty startled but I came across a huge bear blocking the trail in entrance to the wooded area going down the mountain. Bears have these … front facing type eyes that reflect back at you that are almost human looking. I was about 50 yards from it (was looking the other way and didn’t see it) so when I realized the big boy was there… I tried clanking my gear and yelling and all it did was make it start walking towards me so I slowly noped back to the top of the mountain and kept checking behind me. It was also windy and cold and I had already had 1 flashlight that had died. My backup flashlight was dying so I had to get down before that happened, imagine trying to navigate down with just my cell phone light or no light… oh my. Very luckily I decided to take the bear mace this time, I haven't been. So I discharged it for the first time to test it, pretty cool just a shotgun cone of red pepper mist. Okay cool, that gives me like 20 feet. Extended the tripod out all the way like a lance, mace in the other hand, and proceeded to march down the mountain clanging my metal flashlight that was fading on to my tripod and yelling the craziest things. I got to the entrance of the blair witch woods (call them that very creepy haha) that he was blocking and saw I indeed startled him down maybe 50 yards down the hill and he was looking at me.. just sitting with the reflecting front facing eyes. Those eyes will haunt me haha. Also he was down closer to the path I was going. .. so proceeded to keep doing what I was doing all the way down. ready to lance and mace the king of Carver’s Gap if he thought it wise to get at me. Anyways, I always wondered how I would react in those situations glad I didn’t panic.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
