Description

This is IC 2118 - The Witch Head Nebula near Orion. I chose to show it as it appears in our sky which makes the witch profile appear upside down. This beautiful reflection nebula is mainly illuminated by the supergiant star Rigel just out of the frame to the left as well as some other bright stars above. It is a very large but faint structure only 900 ly distant from us. I really like the string of galaxies bisecting the nebula.

This is old data from Heaven's Mirror Observatory in Australia using Telescope Live. Searching through old observatory data for images to process is one way I choose to spend the cloudy winter nights at home. Sometimes you find diamonds hidden in those old files. They are always a challenge to process and learn new skills.
