Description

My first panorama of the Milky Way.  A 5-panel panorama consisting of 15 stacked shots of each of the 5 panels.  Taken with a Canon 7DM2 and Rokinon 16mm f/2 lens, 13 sec at f/2.8 ISO 3200.  Each panel stacked in Sequator, then into PS CC 2019 for the stitching.  This sequence was taken from the upper parking lot at the Onizuka Visitor Center at 9200' on Mauna Kea, Hawaii.  Unfortunately, random head and tail lights in the lower parking lot contaminated a lot of the foreground so I had to aggressively crop the lower portion.  I also had some stitching problems that required use of the Puppet Warp Tool.  Next time I will double check to make sure the tripod is level before beginning the panorama sequence.

The four stars in the lower right portion are the constellation Crux/Southern Cross.  The brightest star in the lower left is Deneb in Cygnus/Northern Cross.  The reddish glow is from the active volcano Kilauea illuminating the cloud layer which forms the lighter colored foreground in the middle of the image.  This cloud layer typically forms due to an inversion layer around 7,000-8,000' elevation.  The light area at the bottom middle is light pollution from the city of Hilo.

I am scouting other locations for Milky Way panoramas where my foreground won't be at the mercy of random car headlights and taillights.  I have a couple of sea level sites in mind if we ever get clear southern skies.
