Description

NGC 4214 is a dwarf galaxy in a distance of about 10 million light years. It is not unlike the Large Magellanic Cloud and belongs to the M94/Canes-I-group. It is undergoing a starburst which leads to the nice structures of nebulae. The faint smudge in the bottom part of the image is DDO 113 (PGC 39145), a companion dwarf galaxy that has ceased forming stars. There are hundreds of backgrounds galaxies visible in this image.

This was first light for my new image train: A 10" Truss RC from CFF optics with an ASI2600MM. The optics are from GSO, because CFF has stopped sourcing mirrors of smaller than 12" (and I do not have space for such a large telescope). The mechanical construction is a huge step up from my TS (GSO) RC8. Collimation was a breeze in comparison and I got the scope collimated enough to fit a corrector/flattener after 2 hours of setup. The whole scope seems very well treated against reflections, and I have a lot less gradients to fight against in post processing. I think there is still a bit room for improvement of the corrector spacing. For lack of a better mount, the scope is currently sitting on an AZ-EQ6. It's fighting a bit with the focal length but I only had to cull 15% of the frames.

Between having to setup the scope and no astronomical darkness I did not even get 4 hours of data - but since I did not plan to take any suitable images at all, I am quite happy about the result.
