Description

Sh2-142, also known as the Wizard Nebula, is an emission nebula visible in the constellation Cepheus.
It is located in the central-southern part of the constellation, extending the line that joins the stars ζ Cephei and δ Cephei and deviating slightly towards the south.
Sh2-142 is an H II region located on the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way, at a distance of approximately 11,500 LY from the Solar System. It appears linked to the young open cluster NGC 7380, which has an estimated age of 5.2 million years, and has a mass of approximately 4000 Suns. This cluster, contains numerous massive stars enclosed in a diameter of about 6 parsecs (19 LY) including three ionizing stars: HD 215835 (O6), HD 215806 (B0IB) and TYC 3996-1327-1 (B0), among which stands out the eclipsing binary DH Cephei (HD215835), which is mainly responsible for the ionization of the nebula. This pair is composed of two stars of spectral class O6, two of the most massive stars in the system. The nebula is also linked to a molecular cloud containing from 6000 to 15000 solar masses, in addition to the open cluster NGC 7382; all these objects are part of the large Cepheus OB1 association.
