This is a 6 panel mosaic of the Heart and Soul Nebulae taken with my Skywatcher Esprit 80ED. I collected narrowband Ha and OIII data for the red and blue channels in this mosaic and used the Astronomy Tools action set in in Photoshop to synthesize a green channel. One learning I’ve had in making mosaics is the importance of having similar size and quality data sets for each panel. Unfortunately I usually can’t be nearly that picky as cloudless nights have been extremely rare in Michigan this fall. Processing of the image becomes much more difficult without this consistency as you’re trying to blend panels with very different signal to noise ratios. Soooooo processing this image was quite the challenge but I think I was able to get to a place where I’m reasonably happy with the result. Hope you enjoy!

The Heart and Soul Nebulae are located roughly 6k light years from earth in the Perseus spiral arm of the Milky Way which is the spiral arm just further out from the core of the galaxy from us. These nebulae are HUGE at a combined 580 light years across, compare that to the famous Orion Nebula which is only 24 light years across.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
