Description

Hey Kids! This is a project I started about a year and a half ago. I call it Martian Art. They are all pictures of the surface of Mars. They come from data collected by the Hi-Rise lunar planetary project at the University of Arizona. Some of you may know about this. Basically they get Mars surface images from a NASA 2500 mega-pixel camera that is in a polar orbit and takes new pictures all the time. They use the pictures to review possible landing sites and other research. They take images that are about 5 km by 25 km from about 300 km above the surface. The detail is so great that you could zoom in to something the size of a backyard swimming pool with incredible detail. They shoot through various filters and come up with B&W or false colored results. They do this of course because Mars is red and you would see not much detail otherwise. This is where the fun part comes in. The university provides it’s own software free of charge which allows you to zoom in on any tiny area, crop it, color it, and do whatever. There are literally thousands of 5 by 25km swatches to choose from, each one of which can be zoomed in on and framed anyway youl like. My idea was to frame and color little areas of Mars that looked like art to me. I did not do any ‘drawing’ other than the color. Some things reminded me of things on Earth and also looked like paintings so I treated them as such. I won’t be including this explanation on any future posts of the project, but if you have any questions let me know. I will be posting many of these in the coming days. Some of them are mind blowing. Stay tuned and enjoy!
