Description

NGC 2903 never seems like it is imaged as much as I would expect it to be. It is mag 9.0 and it is 11.6 x 5.7' in Leo's head. This is about a 6h LRGB integration. The mouse-over is just a cropped version. The galaxy has a nice ochre-colored bar (it is classified as SABbc) and striking collections of young blue stars and HII areas around the galactic nucleus. Notice that blue stars extend into the northern peripheral spiral arm, but much less in the southern arm. There is a complex network of dust lanes extending into the perinuclear disc. You can also see that the edge of the central bar is darker brown on the right side on its lower half, and on the left side on its upper half. The browner edge is the leading edge of the bar (it's as if interstellar dust is being swept up by it), so the galaxy is rotating counter-clockwise.

The faint dwarf galaxy at 2 o'clock is PGC-27115.

The mouse-over version now just shows increased sharpening of galactic core.
