Description

The iconic Horsehead, known as Barnard 33, is located just south  of Altinak (Zeta Orionis),  the easternmost star in Orion's belt. B33 is silhouetted against the bright Ha-rich nebula, IC 434. Nearby NGC 2024, the Flame Nebula (also known as Sh2-277), is an emission nebula whose source is an O-type star IRS 2b that is obscured by the dense dust in the core of the nebula; this dust also obscures an open cluster that is best visualized in xray and infrared wavelengths but remain nearly completely obscured in the visible spectrum.

The plan for this winter was to capture 2-3x the amount of data that this image contains, but the best made plans were no match for the relentless cloud cover that characterized the winter of 2024.
