Description

NGC6165 is a planetary nebula, which is a type of nebula formed when a star with a mass similar to the sun reaches the end of its life and expels its outer layers of gas and dust into space. The gas and dust form a glowing shell around the remaining core of the star, which is called a white dwarf. The glowing shell of gas is illuminated by the intense radiation from the white dwarf, which gives the nebula its characteristic appearance. NGC6165 is located approximately 8,000 light-years from Earth and is thought to be around 10,000 years old. It is visible from the southern hemisphere, as you mentioned.
